Steve and I went to two diverse events this weekend.
On Saturday night I had agreed to perform at a fundraiser for the Chebucto Symphony Orchestra, a lovely community orchestra association. The fundraiser was a coffee house style event, with performances coffee, tea and sweets. I had planned to put in an appearance, make a small donation and get the hell outa Dodge. But the music was so good we stayed for the whole event despite Steve's still messed up back.
On Sunday, after a day of doing laundry, visiting with Connor and an ABDA board meeting, I met up with Steve for a Booksellers convention at a lovely downtown hotel.
He had secured me a place at the dinner because he was one of the keynote speakers. Steve was doing palm readings (as a treat for the delegates) in the Nimbus Publishing Hospitality suite for the afternoon so I just hung out. I had at least ten people try to sell me books for my bookstore, which I don't own. I also don't drink anything when I have to drive so I was not imbibing, at least twenty people offered me a drink. I could totally have gotten blotto on free booze. Note to self, don't bring car to Nimbus events.
The dinner was exquisite! The Prince George laid out a buffet of staggering proportions. There were lovely green salads, Spinach with egg and mushrooms, mixed greens with berries, classic caesar, all with home made dressings, cold seafood including two kinds of smoked salmon (wet and dry-but no sour cream, capers or onion for garnish-sigh) Red potato salad, Israeli Couscous salad, Italian Bean Salad, Assorted cheeses and Cold roast meats served with pickles, and for the hot dishes a choice of lovely chicken breasts with herbs and wine or pan seared haddock with citrus salsa-brilliant!, marinated and fire-roasted vegetables, roasted potatoes and steamed mixed fresh veggies (not overcooked-imagine!) For dessert there was an assortment of tarts and cookies, including langue du chat-my favourite, plus a lovely chocolate mousse cake, with raspberry coulis, a new york style cheesecake, piles of fresh fruit, a beautifully done Pavlova, butter pecan tart and hot bread pudding with maple sauce.
So needless to say Steve and I spent the weekend off our Low GI eating plan.
I have to say Steve had the crowd in the palm of his hand with his speech, he basically told a little about himself then read a story from his new book, Wicked Woods, Ghost Stories of Old New Brunswick. When he finished, I watched audience, as they applauded they were all nodding to each other and muttering, "Man, he's good!"
That's my guy!
