Saw Stardust this weekend and it was uh-mazing. It's a really refreshing change from the action movies and comedies that have come out this summer (although those are good too - Transformers and Knocked Up FTW!), because it's a really sweet fantasy romance. It takes all the usual fairytale elements - wicked witches, scheming princes, a dashing hero - and uses them to tell a unique story about a fallen star. There are some great humorous moments, including Robert De Niro in the greatest role evah. There's a love story, but it's not overly sappy AND, even better, the romantic leads are BOTH pretty cool (shocking, I know). The witch is creepy and deliciously evil. And the special effects are really well done, but they don't overwhelm the story. Oh, and it's based on a novel by Neil Gaiman, who is a god among men, and he really likes what they did with it (fyi, it's not a strict adaptation of the book).
So...everyone should go see Stardust and wonder at it's awesomeness. And then see Superbad. But see Stardust first.
