Yesterday I wrote a marriage proposal.

For work.

MOST AWKWARD LETTER. EVER.

It's a strangely callous world we live in.

If that were true, on the whole, I don't think Belinda would think it so weird that she had to do this.

I don't think that's necessarily true. If I were raised in a controlled environment where everyone...I don't know, is a cannibal, then common society would still be weird as hell to me. Just not what I would be used to.

Right, but that isn't a facet of this that we need to allow hypotheticals for. We know exactly how typical Belinda's level of broad social immersion is, and this forms part of the conditions. If a person sitting in the normal range of 'finger on the social pulse' finds this odd, then by the broadest of social standards it almost certainly is.
To point out that this varies with changes in this easily stipulated condition or social awareness is akin to pointing out that were Belinda a gills-equipped fish-woman, her attentions may be equally distracted by written correspondence that describes 'dry land'.

I know that's not ac accurate assessment. I'm a white male in my early twenties, raised comfortably middle class, public schooling. Doesn't get more beige than that...but there are still a fair few completely acceptable societal norms I find bizarre or even horrifying. Belinda's ethnic for crying out, so her upbringing was almost certainly more heathen and strange than my own.

Sure, so she's not an amazonian robot woman, but the callousness of the world could very easily have escaped her attention.
