Comic of the Week

Feb 26, 2008 21:23

An okay week. Nothing really bad. Some observations:

  • Amazing Spider-Man is incredibly frustrating. They publish three-issue arcs now, and to me it seems the first promising two issues are always followed by a bit-of-a-letdown third. Another thing that irks me is that this character, which used to have a HUGE backstory, now has none at all.

  • Jeph Loeb seems to have lost his ability to write decent books. His ideas are still there, but the execution is lacking. Ultimates #3 has a flashback sequence that seems to be just there to have some boobs jumping up and down (seriously), and to explain why a brother and a sister are probably having sex with eachother (no, really). Hulk #2 has a completely pointless fightscene on the Helicarrier, so that the hulk can smash a jetplane into Iron Man, the carrier can crash down, and Iron Man can shout "Oh the Humanity", a completely out-of-place reference to the disaster with the Hindenburg.
Damn if those two books don't look pretty though.

  • Good books this week are Invincible #48, The Umbrella Academy #6 (written by the singer of My Chemical Romance), Ultimate Human #2, Incredible Hercules #114, Ex Machina #34, and Checkmate #23.

  • Book of the week is Zorro #1, available for download here. Of course, you're a very naughty boy/girl if you actually do this. It's a guilty pleasure, but I loved the old Disney show. This is a lot more mature, but that just makes it better. Check it out.
