Comic of the week

My take on last week's comics, short and sweet, and to put in the words of Rich Johnston, neither fair nor balanced.

(As I wrote this it became much longer than I intended, and far beyond my original goal of just listing the best comics of the week. I have deleted everything, and will write something much shorter and to the point, without listing every comic I've read this week)

Disappointing: Captain America: The Chosen #5. In 5 issues, we've had two issues worth of plot.
Also, Cable and Deadpool #48 is one title character short, since Cable is running around in Messiah Complex these days. This means that, implausible as it may sound, the plot meanders in every direction and still manages not to go anywhere.
Detective Comics #839 is the last issue of The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul. Not much seems to have happened. The writers don't seem to know what to do with Damian. Ra's is back...evidently. The Bat has a family. Where's the point?
Exiles #100is essentially a quick recap of the first 100 issues, whichit does fairly well, then adds some completely unnecessary action. Claremont's characters also still have that annoying tendency to say what is happening around them. "She isn't listening, she's panicked! I can't grab hold of her! But somehow etc etc". *cringe*.

The wow: World of Warcraft #2 is a fantasy-comic, of which there are too few :) The art is sometimes hard to follow and the writing doesn't go too far from the beaten track, but I'm enjoying myself.
She-Hulk #24 was another fun read, with She-hulk in a bar-and-bombing scene that reminded me of something Garth Ennis would write, and the Skrull sidekick in a touching sideplot involving fatherly love.
I'm still enjoying Messiah Complex very much, but to be fair, nothing much happens in this New X-Men #45. Big plot developments are apparently reserved for the main X-Books.
The Order #6 is obviously well-made, just like Fight Club is a great movie. It's just that no-one seems to have much fun. Good read though.
In Dynamo 5 #9, characters DO have fun, be it by kicking someone's arse or kissing someone's girlfriend. This book is on par with Invincible, and that's saying a lot.
Foolkiller #3 remains a surprise hit for me, with good writing and gorgeous painted art, but it gets a bit close to a Punisher-story. Still very enjoyable.
Wolverine Firebreak is a puzzler. It's good. In fact, it's great. Carey remains one of my favourite writers. But where's the point? Still, if you just can't have enough of Wolverine, this is a must-have.
Immortal Iron Fist #11 is very good, but has a TON of characters with VERY weird names who all do a LOT of stuff. Sometimes it's a bit hard to follow, but it's a kung-fu movie done right.

Comic of the week:
There were a lot of good issues this week, but it was a bit hard to find a truly great one. In the end, I picked Umbrella Academy #4, someone gets cut in half by a violin. No wait, someone gets cut in half by the SOUND of a violin. Brilliant!

That's it for this week, see you all next Sunday.
