We got a brochure on the mailbox yesterday. Not in the mailbox, but on the mailbox. It was a reject R-71 brochure. R-71 has to do with whether we ought to reject Washington State's new domestic partnership law. By voting yes you say we should keep the law, while voting no says we should undo the "everything but marriage" statute that the legislature passed. Since the brochure in question arrived by hand, I can only assume that one of the churches in the neighborhood is responsible for the distribution effort. (Saves on postage, I guess.)
The brochure was interesting to the extent that it parroted every single ridiculous anti-gay marriage platform you can think of. Kids being taught about the "gay agenda" in kindergarten. Every culture that has accepted gay people has collapsed in upon itself. And on and on and on.
On the cover of the brochure was a picture. I almost couldn't believe it, but there they were: Ozzie, Harriet, David and Ricky Nelson. Inside was a paragraph identifying the Nelsons and explaining how they had a traditional family and raised their kids with traditional values and how they had had it pretty good.
The brochure didn't mention how Rick Nelson's wife divorced him in the 70's and got custody of all their four children, that he was in massive debt, and that he died at age 45 in a plane crash which was at least rumored to be as a result of the band freebasing cocaine in the back of the DC-3.
Love them family values.
