I don't throw things out when they are associated with something painful - if something has a large amount of my emotional investment (whether positive or negative), I value it highly.

I'm the same way!!!

does it boggle you as much as it does me when people throw out things like photos of happy times with an ex-lover?

I cannot say yes or no to photos, but it does boggle my mind when people (I have noticed this mostly with divorced wives) call their ex-spouses by their surname. I understand that they are doing this to distance themselves, but it bothers me for reasons I am not yet sure about.

Just want to let you know that I found this post helped give me insight into some things I'm working on with worldbuilding in the novel I'm writing. I'm trying to envision a world without Christianity, but it was ingrained in my upbringing in a passive enough way that I have trouble sifting it out of my ideas about religion. Your comment that "A powerful, secure being has zero interest in other beings groveling. Only a whiny, insecure, selfish creature would feel at all uplifted by the self-deprecating of other beings" gives me a good starting point, I think. I hope you don't mind I'm taking notes - technically for a work of fiction, but I've found that working things out in my stories goes a long way to sorting out how I feel about things in real life.

ohhhhh I like this! I opposite-of-mind, it makes me happy! and now I want to daydream about a world without imperialist christianity.

Oooh, imperialism. That is a good thing for me to keep in mind and avoid in my novel too!

Thank you for sharing. Where are the questions coming from? Are they your own?

they're coming from a request for prompts from last year -- I'm still working my way through them :) http://belenen.livejournal.com/594183.html

I keep a lot of stuff due to feeling sentimentally attached. From objects which tell stories of loved ones & times past, to journals rubber-banned shut over show ticket stubs & event wrist bands. I agree, that whether positively associated with or not, some things are a part of you & just as meaningful.
