Feeding a kitten better quality food has the additional extremely noticeable effect of causing it to grow up to be a much bigger cat. When I was a kid, my family must have had about 20 different cats, but my mother bought the cheapest cat food available, and the cats were all tiny. When I got Stardust, I fed her Science Diet for her first year (and Purina One since then). She's fully twice the size of my parents' cat!
This one is based in the UK and has good ingredients: http://www.orijenpetfoods.co.uk/acatalog/orijen_cat.html -- actually, it seems even nicer than Wellness as far as the ratios go! It looks like they deliver to your door, too.
Bel you're a superstar!! I spent hours yesterday trying to find a good UK one but all I did was confuse myself and find out that all the brands I thought were good are either full of fillers or blacklisted by animal rights groups! This one looks very good and I like the fact that I can use the same food for my cat and my kitten - I've placed an order now so I hope they like it too. Thank you so much for the link :D
I feed my three cats either Blue Buffalo or Natural Balance, depending on whether I go to Petco or Petsmart, and since both brands are ultra premium, I've seen how great my cats have been since being on the food. I'd never go back to low-quality food with gluten and fillers.
They seem to prefer Blue Buffalo, probably because of the LifeSource nuggets. But they've also devoured Natural Balance, so I'm never sure. However, they also really seem to love Natural Harmony Farms food, which is a subsidiary of Blue Buffalo - it's sold at my local grocery store (which is a huge step for a grocery store, I think; it's the only natural brand they sell). So I could probably feed them either Blue Buffalo or Harmony Farms for the rest of their lives and they'd be fine. It's on par with Wellness, which is what my parents feed their cat, and Toby is very healthy.
Right now, I have a feeder that holds three pounds of dry food in the kitchen, and that has Natural Balance. Upstairs in the bedroom is a bowl that has Blue Buffalo (I like to make sure all the cats have chances to eat around the house). They seem to eat the Blue Buffalo more enthusiastically.
We need to feed mine some better stuff. They get dry and gushy food, but it's usually kit n kaboodle and nine lives. I heard that's the equivalent of feeding them cheetos or something.
We don't have a Trader Joe's here though. Maybe Iams will do.
I'm not meaning to hijack anything here, but Iams is only a slight difference from the other stuff you're feeding.
If you have a feed store nearby or Petsmart (Pet Supplies Plus and Petland will also work) they all have good high quality foods. Blue Buffalo is a great brand for the price (their Wilderness line is very good).

They're all great foods you can look into. I can talk animal nutrition for hours on end, so if you have any questions feel free to throw them out at me :).
