I am royally pissed -- I deleted my photos page (after saving the code) and deleted all of the images... I'll put it back up when I figure out some ways to restrict or eliminate hotlinking. what's hotlinking?

the thing where people have to e-mail you for the password sounds like a smart way to go - that way you know exactly who's getting into what.

hotlinking is taking the image url and linking to it on a different site so that people can see my image on a different site. That causes my bandwidth to get eaten up, and I pay for bandwidth.

Couple of suggestions. walkingbear April 29 2005, 12:37:47 UTC
I'm not sure where your site is hosted, but I'm over on Dreamhost which seems to have the best deal for bandwidth. 192GB/month for $20.

They also have a 'disable remote linking for this directory' tool that comes in handy. It basically does what was already suggested with the htaccess file.

well, right now I pay $3/month, and I don't actually need more bandwidth. I know I haven't gotten that many visitors in such a short time, so it had to be hotlinking.

The disabling remote linking thing would be helpful, but it's still too steep for my wallet. Thanks for the suggestion, though!
