This is something that most people will never understand.

You've hit upon the way I see things. The problem is that the balance has yet to be restored. Before, flying was much less annoying than it is now. I actually wasn't able to take a flight to Canada about 2 years ago because I didn't have my passport/BC with me. I was amazed - out of the dozen or more flights I've taken to/from Canada, I've never needed a passport/BC before.

The reaction was overblown, and it just keeps going. I didn't agree with it then, and I don't agree with it now.

OTOH, this particular situation appears to be fairly straightforward. It was a series of little coincidences that added up to have an unfortunate outcome. Had any of the pieces been different, it would have been okay. I think that the whole situation should be analyzed and questioned, but not necessarily in this way.

What people need to realize is that had the civilians acted in different ways, the incident might have been avoided or turned out differently. By the same token, had the FAMs acted differently, an incident affecting many more lives might have occured.
