The economy woes have hit East Texas. We are always the last to get hit and the last to recover. The hospital where I work informed us this week: there will be no merit raises for FY2010; each employee's PTO hours will be reduced by one hour per pay period; they are selling off the Hemodialysis Unit and are selling or shutting down the Hospice Unit. The Home Health Unit has three months to increase its patient volume, and must maintain the increase, or it, too, will be shut down.

They say they are trying very hard to avoid layoffs. I think the PTO reduction was a very good idea. It saves the hospital money but no actual money comes out of our paychecks.

I heard in a round-about way through our director that the hospital lost $8M last year. That's quite a chunk of change to make up.
