Election eve: Just the facts, man

Nov 05, 2012 17:23

At long last, another election season is finally near its end, as the voting is done and counted tomorrow.

The most distressing thing these campaigns have established, between the debates, partisan emails and mailings and TV/radio ads by candidates and especially the superPACs, is that the late Daniel Patrick Moynihan has been proven wrong -- everyone is entitled to "their own facts." And such ironclad facts are held with religious fervor by their believers, and trumpeted in multi-million-dollar campaigns.

Sure, we can get the straight poop from Politifact, but those confident in their "truth" know that any source that debunks their assertions must therefore be biased, and therefore unreliable. Like how I occasionally read that Snopes is biased.

So, after tomorrow, it seems a lot is at stake -- as winners not only get to write our history, but also apparently our reality as well.
