If, a decade or more ago, you had asked John what animal he identified with, what he considered his "totem," he would have said eagle or maybe wolf. But that's not what he was asked roughly 10 years ago.
He was asked what manner of monkey he considered himself. After all, as a charter member of the now-dormant PaperMonkies online gang, he should have some sort of primate alter ego. His nickname for years had been borrowed from a space alien, but he never considered himself that character (created and trademarked by others as it is). So, what "monkey" was he?
One problem: His girlfriend PenGwen (you know her as
the_dark_snack ) did not like monkeys (long story, and hers to tell), so a compromise was struck. John chose the lemur, a creature he had come to like during various zoo visits. A primate, but not a monkey. Thus I, that
ringtailed prosimian in the picture box, became his animal avatar.
A few years later, he signed up on LiveJournal and had the good fortune to get his handle,
beldar , a rare thing as there are quite a few going by that name around the Internet. His first thought for a distinctive but anonymous default icon was to search for an image of me, who he has since called Lucky Lemur.
You won't always see me -- I'm one of over 100 images now, including a couple of other lemur pics -- but since I was first downloaded I have been the "default," the "please do not copy." I'm there on the profile page, and accompany replies from e-mail. I even have a stitches-and-stuffing version who rides the gearshift of John and Gwen's car.
So, what is Lucky like? What *does* he like? (And yes, I'm male, like my human alter ego, though mine is a matriarchal species.) I, like the dude who writes the postings, am fairly laid-back, with my own odd sense of humor. I'm no genius, but I've been around the island a few times. I really like vanilla and tamarind, which aren't John's absolute favorite flavors, but he likes them too. I don't actually have a crown with a gecko on it, but I do get along quite well with penguins.
So that's me, the lemur on
beldar 's LJ.
As for the man himself, you can get a lot of clues to what makes him tick on his profile page. (And, of course, you can read his posts.) Thanks for your time, I'll be over in the corner if you need me.
