(Crossposted from my work blog at
eastofindy.com; it's a review of an
Indyfringe performance, done in the style of the show's protagonist)
well boss, good of you to leave the computer open
got to say it's better these days,
so much easier to hop from key to key
and hit return
we could easier use capslock on/off for capital letters
but thanks to mr. marquis this is now a literary style
despite temptation, won't shorten words lest i sound like some lazy texter
if you don't want to hit so many buttons to communicate why don't you just talk
it -is- a telephone, why squander god's gift of speech
but that's not my topic
my fellow insects down in indy are all abuzz about the fringe show
seems some guy has got archy down pat
of course he gives half the show to that tramp mehitabel
still he does her justice with all the expressions and cat-itude
but for archy he does a great tribute
full of quotes from the old days
the social commentary and satire
the plots of bugkind as they get fed up with the ways of people
not all happy reviews though, the crickets are annoyed that this jeff culbert fellow included archy ranting about how crickets drive him mad with their cheer-up, cheer-up
didn't that old roach know, the crickets say, that it's because we don't do blues, we play jazz
oh, and jazz you get in this performance, jazz in the background music, jazz in the way mehitabel struts, jazz in the rhythms of the words ol' archy hopped out back in those long-gone days
if his soul has bounced back into the shell of another creature, i'm sure he'd find the foibles of mankind still intact. maybe that's why he's not hopping on a computer keyboard right now. he's already said it all
enough of that boss, did you leave me cracker crumbs under the desk
(Blogger's note: I came back to my desk after realizing I hadn't shut down my computer after finishing work, and the above was on the screen. Looks like I may have to call an exterminator. But it does remind me of one of the shows I saw at the
IndyFringe festival over the weekend. "archy and mehitabel" is based on the
writings of early 20th-century newspaper writer Don Marquis, who claimed that a cockroach was typing essays and free-verse poetry on his typewriter when he wasn't at his desk. The stories of archy (capitals were a pain to type, so he didn't bother) and his feline friend related their present problems and their past lives. I was a fan even before I became a journalist. And Canadian performer
Jeff Culbert does a brilliant interpretation of those old pieces. There were only a few people in the audience when I went, so I fear it may become the best Fringe show nobody sees. If you are going to the festival, do consider adding this to your list.)
