I know her pain

Jun 30, 2009 12:50

Abundant work and personal dramas have knocked me off schedule with the cancerblog. I should be resuming that starting about the second week of July.

But in the meantime, I got word from sister ambwilson  that a niece of one of her coworkers is being treated for Hodgkins lymphoma. She works at Penn State University and friends are helping with a fundraiser for her to cover her growing expenses.

Here's the letter that was forwarded to me:

A 23 year-old technician in the Dept. of Entomology, Alyssa Gendron, has just begun chemotherapy for Hodgkins lymphoma and is faced with a bill of $500/month to pay for anti-nausea medication and other meds she has to take during her 4-6 months of chemotherapy. Alyssa needs our help, and we have a plan to help her.

We are holding a raffle to raise money to help her. First prize will be a full size quilt made by the well-known master quilt maker, Nancy Ostiguy. The fabric has an insect motif . Once the quilt is finished, in a few weeks, it will be on display in the Entomology Dept. Office, 501 ASI. Second prize will be a spa package from the D-Stress Station in Boalsburg consisting of a one-hour massage and a 30-minute session of reflexology. Third prize will be a twin size white and blue afghan, can be seen in 501 ASI

If you want to help Alyssa but are not interested in these prizes, feel free to make a donation or consider buying raffle tickets anyway, and if you win, use the prize as a gift (birthday, wedding, anniversary, new parent, etc.).

Raffle tickets can be purchased at $5 per ticket from Karen Dreibelbis in the Entomology Dept. Office, 501 ASI Building. Or, if you prefer, you can send her a check in campus mail, made out to her, and she will send you your ticket(s) back in campus mail. Be sure to write your name and email address or phone number on the back of the ticket that Karen will keep in the box of tickets (if she sends you tickets through campus mail she will take care of this for you). Also feel free to purchase tickets to sell to friends who might be interested.

Questions? Contact Karen at kdd2@psu.edu or Kelli at kxh25@psu.edu

We hope that you will forward this email to your departmental listservs and also to personal friends. We appreciate your help in spreading the word.

Timeline: Tickets will be sold through July 17 at 3 pm, or until we sell 250-300 tickets, with the drawing on Monday July 20. Winners will be contacted immediately after the drawing.

health, life
