an open letter to beyonce knowles

dear ms. knowles (or ms. fierce, whomever you may be today):

for hundreds of years, the term "diva" has been used to connote an extremely gifted and talented singer. until perhaps the past 30 years, it has been exclusive to opera singers, especially sopranos, but now seems to be used for a singer of merit in any genre. this new usage is questionable, and downright irksome to some, but one must accept the subtle changes of language over time. point being, a diva is an exceptional female singer. you, by way of this current definition, are most certainly a diva.

however. a diva is most assuredly NOT "a female version of a hustler," as you proclaim in your latest radio single. unfortunately, real divas (of the operatic variety) are rarely "so sick and filthy with benji's we can't spend," as you attest, so we are unable to take this matter to court. thus, i implore you: stop sullying our moniker.

all best wishes, from one diva to another.
