First Visit to the Range

Dec 03, 2008 07:25

We blew up some stuff yesterday. They placed small amounts of commercial and military grade explosives on small wooden tables. They said that they kept the amounts down so we could see what the different explosives did to the wood. We stood behind a big sand dune that was up the mountain and were behind a thick steel bunker that had very thick glass observation ports. We were looking through the ports and through a set of mirrors so we could see over the berm. They did a blasting cap (it was small but obliterated an orange.), Cast Booster, Dynamite, Water gel, Data Sheet, Det. Cord, AMFO (Ammonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil),  C-4. I may have missed one. The power of the explosives were very impressive for the amounts used. I was certainly not expecting that large of chest pounding booms. The ANFO and C-4 were placed on 1 inch thick plates. They were the biggest explosions. The ANFO bent the plate and the C-4 cut a perfect hole through the plate!

Today we are off to the blasting area to observe Improvised Explosives and the effects of terrorist bombs on rooms and objects.

The range we are at has done several things with the Myth Busters show. They were recently there taping for a show. The first one they did there was the cleaning of the drum on the cement truck. That was a BIG Boom!
