picspam: traitor's gate

I've been re-watching the first series of Spooks, which I probably should've done before writing fic about it - why did no one remind me that it was Helen and Danny who lived together in 1.01? Wow, I'd forgotten that.

Anyway, I'm up to 1.04, Traitor's Gate, and I just have to say these things:

- - -

Zoe and Danny spend the first ten minutes or so freaking out about screwing up a surveillance. No one gets to freak out about something as normal as getting yelled at any more!

(I would also bite my fingernails if Harry was looking at me like that. Actually, Harry is angry for this entire episode, and pulls some wonderful faces.)

JOOLS: Well now I thought it might be rather jolly if we walked about a bit. Always gives one a bit of a frisson don't you find, going amongst the plebs talking of high state secrets?

And then they go and drink booze from plastic cups while listening to Peter Salter having it on with the anarchist girl next door. How did I forget how awesome this episode was? (Except for the heaps of angsty Tom/Ellie, which I mainly skipped.)

TOM: Look out, not in.
SALTER: Salter's rule for preserving the sanity of the officer.
TOM: I remember.
SALTER: I should bloody well hope you do.

I really, really love every single scene of Tom and Peter Salter together. How Tom goes from playing the student to the master and back again in about half a second flat and Salter's trying to second-guess him and just can't.

And then Zoe picks up fake dog shit. YAY. And then Tessa is even more awesome for being devious and corrupt. Oh, Tessa, how I wish you'd pop up in series 8...

JOOLS: So! Now your star officer gets caught stealing computers from a university. I'm quizmaster.
HARRY: Tom is quizzing.
JOOLS: Tom? Little Tinkering Tom here is responsible for this mess. If it's one of you let it be Tessa.
HARRY: Jools, until you and your old Etonian cronies give me the push this is my department. Tom will be quizmaster.
JOOLS: I have viewing rights.
HARRY: Be our guest.

Oh, Tom's face when Harry says "Tom will be quizmaster" - does he look like a super ruthless interrogator?

And then they go into the meeting room and watch the quizzing because Harry bugs his own office. On special occasions.

I can't precisely figure out what it is about series 1 which is so vastly different from the more recent series (aside from, you know, the whole cast). I thought it was a bit more small-scale stuff but the nasty guys are nasty. Maybe it's just that the nastiness isn't going to precipitate World War Three, the fall of the government, the end of the human race as we know it etc etc?

I don't know. But I'm thoroughly enjoying myself.

That is all.
