Do you have a favourite .psd file when making your icons? No, not really. I don't often use .psd's when I make icons. If I download a .psd I usually don't keep it for very long. Most of the time I make .psd's of colorings I come up with on my own and then save them for future use.
How do you pick a cap to use? Often I'll click the 'most viewed' link on the galleries I visit. Or I'll refresh the 'random files' to come up with some of the caps I use for my icons. I find that's the best way to get interesting caps for icons. Most of the time you get caps that no one has used before, which makes things more unique and sets you apart from the rest a little. :)

When/How do you decide to use text? When I look at this icon, I'd say that most other people would have decided not to use any text at all with this cropping, so how did you decide to add text? And at which point do you normally decide to add text? Do you see a cap and just know or do wait until everything else is finished?
When/How do you decide to use text? Totally and completely on the fly. Seriously. It's not something I map out ahead of time, I just go with the flow and try things out. Like with the icon you linked, that took a lot of fiddling with fonts and placements before I decided that I liked how it looked. The space between Oz and Veruca just screamed to be filled, so I had sort of an idea in mind when I went about the text, but not really. I don't know. It's hard to explain, I guess. *G* Basically, I just play around and experiment.
at which point do you normally decide to add text? Sometimes I have something in mind right off the bat when I choose a cap for an icon, but that's reaaaaly rare. Like I said above, most of the text I add to my icons is spontaneous and in the moment. No rhyme or reason, I'm afraid. :) It's just pure dumb luck sometimes.
