Chinese 101 - 恕(shù), Forgiven
Radicals are important components of Chinese characters. As we’ve seen, the character for time, 時, includes the radical for day, 日, as the forces that dictate time are inseparable from the rise and fall of the sun that marks the beginning and end of each day.
Today’s word, 恕 (shù), forgiven, is composed of the character for heart,心 (xīn), which suggests that this word and our emotions are intrinsically connected. Its upper half is the character 如(rú) , which means alike, or similar. Together as 恕 (shù), they mean our hearts are similar. That is, when someone does you wrong, try to view the situation through their heart, and perhaps you will learn to forgive. In fact, the Chinese proverb, 將心比心, means to put oneself in another’s shoes. You’ll be happier when your heart can understand another person’s heart.
