So while at Joann's shopping for beads, I bought some patterns to use as a starting point for the dress. I'll be making the mockups of the skirt and bodice/sleeves seperately because they're not attached in the costume (Thank Goodness!)
I've chosen a civil war era pattern for the skirt, which would actually be two skirts, the top being a sheer layer that can be pinned up at the side. I got some pretty lavender satin on the clearance rack for $.99 a yard so I'm going to use that for the mockup. It's almost 9yds of fabric so I figure I can salvage a good bit after the mockup if I need it for something else later. I'm beginning to think that I might need a hoop under all that skirt so that it comes out right. I was going to just use my crinoline from my wedding dress but it's not all that puffy. Any thoughts? (Aurora, I know you just did a hoopskirt, what do you think?)
It's a pretty full skirt:
So I figured this was my best bet:
I also got this pattern for a starting point on the sleeves. I've never done puff sleves before and figure I can just trace out the sleeve pattern onto posterpaper and leave the original pattern untouched for later use.
Aurora, I know you're currently fighting with puffed sleeves so I may need your advice when I reach this point. I'm petrified! :P
We're having a Southeastern Costumers' Society meeting Sunday during which I'm going to attempt to do a duct tape dummy on myself for the bodice with the help of a co-member. I want it to be more corsetlike with moderate boning and back lacing but no busk. We'll see how that goes. It should be a learning experience at the very least.
Comments and suggestions are most welcome! :)
