USA Trip 2013 - NYC

Next up was New York!

I'm pretty certain that a bunch of these photos are going to be out of order, but the first thing we did the day after arriving in New York was head to the Bronx Zoo...

I am terrified of magpies. Birds in general, but magpies are the wooooorst

After spending the day at the Bronx Zoo, and trying not to get too soaked, we headed to the baseball! Yankees Stadium! We got to see the memorial garden as well...

Great seats at the game!

We had to move at one point when it started pouring with rain. Sarah, Carissa and I took a photo in our new seats

It was a great game - and I have to say that Yankee Stadium had fantastic staff! So friendly, and if you look lost they come over to help you out. And I got to have garlic fries, so I was thrilled!

We had lunch the next day at the Central Park Boat House

We stopped to visit Alice

And Hans Christian Andersen

Stu and Sarah and I decided to keep walking through Central Park after that and then headed up to check out the exterior that they used for the restaurant they're aaaaalways at in Seinfeld

We stopped by Strawberry Fields for a photo, on our way to the Natural History Museum

Stu and Ron Swanson... Or possibly Teddy Roosevelt

The 9/11 Memorial - I thought the waterfalls were really tasteful. The huge line, and the security check to get in was surprising though

From the memorial, we wandered down to Wall St

And took the Staten Island Ferry, and checked out the sites on the way across

Another Seinfeld reference - the corner of 1st and 1st, also known as the Nexus of the Universe

We tried to catch a taxi from there up to Grand Central Station, but a fire on one of the bridges, and a crash in one of the tunnels wrecked traffic, so we ended up walking half the way, but it was worth it!

Absolutely amazing looking place!

We got to see a fair bit of theatre while we were there. For some reason, I don't have a picture of Phantom of the Opera, but we saw Wicked, and The Book of Mormon and Rock of Ages as well

Book of Mormon was absolutely hilarious. We loved it! The seat numbering was strange, so Carissa didn't realise when she booked that she and Rand were on one side of the theatre, and Stu, Stu H, Sarah and I were on the other side. We saw Chaske Spencer (from Twilight) a few rows in front of us, so I had to go let Carissa know, as she's had him as a guest before and gets on quite well with him. He was shocked to see her!
We went to stage door and got to meet a few of the actors - this was the guy who played Elder Cunningham

This frog will change your life...

We stopped at the Guggenheim which was incredibly boring. There was an exhibition by this guy who was playing on the juxstaposition of light and dark. There was one room where you go in, and have to wait *15 minutes* for your eyes to adjust before you can see the art on the wall. There was another room with different pictures of a light in different corners of the same room. Because of this exhibition, they also had covered up the whoooole spiral in the middle of the gallery. So when you think of the Guggenheim from movies like the Interpreter, you couldn't see any of that stuff. We got to see some Van Gogh paintings, and that was amazing, but that was the only good part about it.

So we left, and went to the Met which was absolutely amazing. We spent the rest of the day walking around and only made it through the first floor and a tiny corner of the second and third floors because they were part of the American History part of it.

I was quite thrilled to see some cross-stitches done in the early 1800s

We went to a pre-season NFL game. Now, Stu's a massive fan of the NFL, and was so excited to go, but this was such a disappointing experience. Between not being able to take handbags into the ground, needing to have the metal detector wand done to even get in the ground, and then the amazingly boring game, we left at half time. There's a lot to be said for watching the game on tv, where the huuuge gaps between plays are filled with commentary.

I enjoyed driving to the football, because we went through the Lincoln Tunnel, which just made me think of The Stand, and Larry Underwood trying to get out of NYC.

We went up the Empire State Building, then we got to do a tour of Rockerfeller plaza. I loved being there. After watching all of 30 Rock, and being huge fans of Saturday Night Live, it was fantastic to get to go to 30 Rock!

NBC Pages! These were our tour guides for the NBC Studio Tour. We had gone up to the tope of 30 Rock, and when we finished that we went to see when the next Studio Tour was. In about 2 minutes! So we got to go through and check out some of the studios and see the SNL set. We got to see the staaage and the door they come through to do their monologue! It was kind of amazing

I love this out the front of 30 Rock

Stage door of Rock of Ages! My habit of taking a Sharpie with me everywhere in the US came in handy when none of the actors had sharpies (someone at the Book of Mormon stage door was making sure they all had a sharpie for signing), so mine got used for us and for the kid who was there as well

Our last stop before we headed to the airport...

It was fantastic! We got to see sooo much. We had dinner at Shake Shack a few times, because Carissa is in looove with it. She booked a really nice hotel, on 46th Street, next door to the Church of Scientology. It was about half a block from Times Square, and was 2 blocks north of where Phantom and Rock of Ages were, and 2 blocks south of Wicked and Book of Mormon, so it was really a great location.
