Yule be sorry you read this

Public Service announcement, people.

Yule is not Christmas. It is the winter solstice.

So, if you are from the southern hemisphere, it is inappropriate to say "Have a cool Yule!" to someone at Christmas. Yule is in June. And don't talk about having a Yule barbeque, unless it's to accompany a midwinter swim.

In the northern hemisphere, it is slightly more difficult to separate the two festivals. However, Yule generally falls on the 21st or 22nd of December. Christmas is on the 25th. Saying "happy yule!" to somebody on the 23rd-25th Dec is just a wee bit late. It's not quite as bad as wishing a Jewish person "Happy Yom Kippur!" but it's close.

So if you want to wish me a Happy Yule, do it before the 21st. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until next December, as I won't be in New Zealand in June. :)

Axial tilt is the reason for the season! Put the Sol back in Solstice!

yule
