I was driving home from work today. I saw something in the road that looks like a clump of leaves. It was on the white line just off the curb of the street. Right before I get to it, it picks up its head and looks at me. It was a kitten! He was just kind of laying in the road, and it looked like his back legs were broken because he was trying to crawl using only his forelimbs. I find the next side street I can and do a quick 3-point turn, thinking that I've got to get this little guy to an emergency vet, and any brothers or sisters he may have in the area if someone just dumped them out of the car.
The first time by, he was in my lane. As I'm coming back by, he was on the other side of the street. I had to stop in traffic for the light right across the street from him. Turns out it's a baby raccoon, but I'm still going to try to get to him and take him to a vet as long as he was still alive. Even though he was a wild animal, it wasn't like he was able to get up and run. I still felt like I had to do something.
I got to the light and turned to go into the parking lot nearby. Just about the time I got out of my car, I heard a *thump* and what sounded like an animal squealing because it got ran over. Sure enough, by the time I was able to walk over to the little guy, he'd been hit. He was now totally in the gutter. His back was smushed and he had bled so much from under his front limb there's no way he was still alive.
It was bad. Not how I pictured starting my weekend.
