Kami waited for Kagetora just outside the back gate. They’d been able to exchange a few lengthy letters over the years, and now Kagetora was home, celebrating his 20th birthday.
“Kami-san?” A deep, velvety voice asked.
Kami turned to see a tall, well-built, bald, young man standing there, a shy smile coming to his lips. He was still dressed in his monk’s robes with prayer beads hanging from his wrist.
“Nagao-sama…” Kami said, amazed at how the cute little boy had grown into a handsome young man.
Kagetora laughed quietly, “You could tell.”
“Your eyes are the same,” Kami smiled at him.
“Tried as hard as they could, but they couldn’t take that away. I’m glad to see you.”
~*~*~*~*~
Gackt started awake from his dream. He was curled up behind her not that unusual, but there was someone behind him.
“Mmm Gakkun… You’re awake?” It was You. Right… last night…
“Mmmm… eyes are open…” In all his thinking beforehand, about how uncomfortable he’d be afterwards, he was quite satisfied with his current position. He felt You’s chest rumble with a quiet laugh. You’s hand came up from its place over both Gackt and her waists to tuck some hair behind Gackt’s ear, then he kissed the back of his head. The hand settled on Gackt’s shoulder.
“Last night was nice…” He rubbed Gackt’s shoulder.
“Yeah…”
You pulled on Gackt’s shoulder and rolled them onto their back so she was semi-undisturbed. He wrapped his arms around Gackt, and apparently didn’t notice that he tensed for a second.
“You know… You’ve never let any of us hold you like this… Or really held any of us…”
“I haven’t?”
“No… You always left after you were finished with one of us…”
“Oh…”
You made an amused noise, “You never noticed?”
Gackt shook his head. You leaned his head against Gackt’s. “That’s okay.” He stroked Gackt’s abs.
They enjoyed the moment for a while, Gackt almost falling back to sleep, when You asked, “Do you regret this?”
Gackt looked at the back of his hand, thinking he could still see a scar…
“Do you… regret this new step in us?”
“Do you regret that choice?”
“No…”
~*~*~*~*~
Kagetora sat down on the rock next to Kami.
“Going to grow your hair back?” Kami hesitantly reached up and rubbed Kagetora’s bald head. He didn’t know, after 12 years, how much contact the young lord would allow. Apparently it didn’t bother him.
“Probably… It’s kind of annoying shaving it every day.” He let go of his hand and looked at the back of it and the light scar there. “Kami?”
“Hmm?”
“I don’t mean to offend or accuse… but, did you do this?” He smoothed his thumb over the scar. “It’s never been quite right. I don’t remember getting it, so it must have been after I passed out the very first time we met… It aches when it’s going to rain, along with my ankle, and sometimes when it’s been sunny for several days in a row… S-… Some of the monks were wary of it…”
“Hmmm… I’m sure you didn’t have it when I left you at the gate…” He didn’t sound too convincing, and he never told him the truth.
“Why don’t you come inside?”
“Considering what you thought the reason for your father sending you away was, he might not want to see us in the same room.”
“Too bad, I’m not a child anymore.”
“Nagao-sam-”
“Kage-chan!” Nami called for her brother and he looked up and sighed.
“Please come in? So I don’t have to stumble back when I get sleepy?” He smiled and pulled at Kami’s sleeve like he used to. He reached up and tried to loosen his own robes with his other hand.
“Are you warm?”
“Yeah… 4 layers is kinda warm. I didn’t have time to change and all that I have here is 8-year-old size.”
“What about something of your father’s?”
Kagetora laughed, “Unlikely… I’ll probably get measured tomorrow.”
“Kage-chan!” Nami sounded more insistent.
“Coming!” He tried to sound as whiney as possible.
“Found something for you to wear!”
“Okay!” He sighed, “Wonder what that’ll be…” He stood and pulled Kami after him.
“Nagao-sama-”
“I know it’s been 12 years since we last saw each other, and we only knew each other a short time before that, but you can call me ‘Kagetora’.”
“A-Are you sure?”
“Yes.” He let Kami’s hand go. “Come inside. The festivities are pretty much over anyway, so you don’t have to socialize.” He stepped out of his sandals and onto the porch, holding his hand out for Kami. He took it and followed Kagetora to his room.
A servant was waiting for him and opened the fusuma. Kagetora saw one of his mother’s more subtle yukata hanging in his room, with one of his father’s obi on the rack.
“Are you sure about that one?” He asked the servant, ignoring Kami’s quiet giggles.
“Yes, Nagao-sama. Nami-dono searched and compared for the last hour for one that would fit you.”
“Uh huh…” He stepped into the room, followed by Kami, and requested that the servant bring saké.
“This is going to take some getting used to…” For 12 years, he was not nobility, so he had to do things for himself. He removed his sash and started removing layers. When he was about to take the last layer off, Kami cleared his throat. Kagetora turned and looked at him.
“Don’t you think…”
“You can turn away if you’re uncomfortable. Being the son of a lord, people were always dressing me, and at the temple, you get used to changing in front of others… Sorry…”
He turned back around, opened his kosode, and slid the fusuma to the courtyard open, letting the moonlight in. He let the kosode slide from his body, unintentionally showing Kami some marks on his back. The looked worse to Kami than they actually were.
“Naga-” Kami corrected himself, “Kagetora-sam-”
“Just ‘Kagetora’.” He sounded calm and at peace. Moon-bathing was comforting to him.
“Kagetora… What happened?”
“What?” He turned around and Kami could see how well-muscled he’d become.
“On your back…” There were a few on his front as well.
“Oh…” Kagetora brought his hand up to one on his abdomen. “Insolence… When I first got there, but the rest are from training… You can see them? I know where they are and can barely see them…”
“Only one or two…” He lied.
The fusuma slid open and the servant brought the saké in. “Thank you,” Kagetora told the servant, who just bowed and excused himself.
Kami poured saké for the both of them as Kagetora took the yukata down. He slipped into it, but didn’t tie it closed. He sat down next to Kami and took a saké cup,
“May I see your hand?” Kagetora held his hand out for Kami to examine.
“You’re shaking, Gakkun…”
“What?”
“Gakkun.”
~*~*~*~*~
Gackt came back to reality with You rubbing his chest.
“Hum?” Gackt lifted his hand and rubbed his face.
“Are you okay? You kinda spaced out there…”
“Yeah… Just been having a lot of dreams about the past lately…”
“Well… I asked if you regret last night.”
“Not… yet…” He felt You wilt. “I don’t know yet… Still too fresh…”
“Well, I’m glad you asked me… And… I’d forgotten how squishy girls are.” He chuckled. “Gaku…” His tone became serious, “She talked to me beforehand... She said you’d had a bad experience before you met us.” He felt Gackt tense, since he’d obviously left his past untold for a reason. “She didn’t say what it was, just that it was bad. I… I hope last night was okay…” He nuzzled Gackt’s head, feeling him relax a bit.
“If I didn’t think it would be, I wouldn’t have asked, You,” he feigned. You hugged Gackt a little tighter.
“Gakkun… I had a dream… But I don’t think it was me in the dream.” Gackt just waited for You to continue. “I was a child, it was night. The moon was out, but I had a lantern.” Gackt shifted his eyes to look over at her, who was still asleep. He stayed quiet, trying to think of how to respond. “I was walking through the woods and heard a noise… That’s where it stopped.”
Gackt let out a held breath. “You…” He could tell Gackt was apprehensive, so he comfortingly stroked Gackt’s abs. “I…” Gackt sighed. “I never told you or Cha about my past… Don’t tell Cha. This is between you and me.” You kissed his ear in affirmation. “‘Gackt’ isn’t my real name. Nor is ‘Satoru’, ‘Sho’, or any other name you’ve known me by…”
“Continue.”
“I was born as Nagao Kagetora…”
You thought for a moment, “I… I’ve heard that name…”
“Later known as Uesugi Kenshin.”
You gasped in realization. “Whoa… I just… With a piece of history!” He giggled pervily.
Gackt groaned at You’s immaturity. “I got wounded in a battle and that’s when I was turned. But… Hyde’s not my maker…”
“Well, I kinda thought that…”
“I knew my maker beforehand… He’d become a friend of the family. A-Afterwards… He, until last night… Was the only man I’ve ever completely surrendered to, even though it took 50 years… He was… Stolen from me about 50 years before I met you and Cha…”
“Oh Gaku…”
Gackt sniffed. “I’d had it repressed for the last 350 years… but…” He turned his head and looked at her. “You remember when she was kidnapped?”
“Yeah and you took her to Niigata.”
“And you know she’s kinda special, right?”
“Yeah, but I don’t know a lot about that…”
“I tried to help her find what happened to her during her captivity, but… It kinda backfired. I did find that, but all those memories came back to the surface…”
“Oh…”
“I’ve been having random memory dreams since.”
You thought for a moment, “So, how did I see the woods?”
“Her influence.” He didn’t elaborate.
She made a noise and shifted in her sleep. Generally, that was Gackt’s cue to cuddle up to her.
“I guess I don’t know that much about her…”
“That’s okay.” Gackt tugged him over and they both snuggled up to her. “Just close your eyes and let her stillness envelop you…” Gackt intertwined their fingers and laid their arms over her back, falling asleep.
You guessed that Gackt could find that ‘stillness’ better than he could because it took him half an hour to find it and calm down.
