Steve is Flint's best friend and most trusted companion even if he is a monkey. He is first introduced in the movie when Flint invents a monkey thought translator. The device is tested on him, but just because there's a translator on his head now doesn't mean that he will actually be smart. He may be considered as the comic relief in some scenes of the movie.
He seems to be a capuchin monkey, which makes sense because they are sometimes considered as exotic pets.

Steve had a one-track mind, but that's to be expected considering he's a monkey. Flint may talk to him often but we're not exactly sure how much actually gets through to Steve. He's also an excited little monkey who just wants his gummi bears, even if it does make him hyper and more destructive.
Considering he's a monkey, he'll probably do monkey-like things like flinging "chocolate ice cream" at random passers-by.
He has an affinity for moustaches. Given the chance, he will always try to grab for one... Which saddens me because I've only seen six people in som with facial hair and only one with a moustache.

With the help of Flint's invention, Steve can speak through a modified Speak and Spell which functions as a monkey thought translating device. However, most of what he says come out in one word sentences. If you're lucky he'll say two words like "Gummi Bears!"
