I have done a number of things over the last few days to avoid working on my dissertation. Despite this, I have a first draft done and dusted and with my supervisor for comments. That's really interesting! I know there are a small number (a few dozen, normally attracting fewer than ten per monthly meeting) of people who meet up to play the German card game Skat in the UK; you could do worse than trying to ask them, not least because among their number is John McLeod of the unparalleled pagat card games web site.

The other thought is that there is a French bridge club in London, which meets up at the same location (though not the same time, obv.) as the British Skat players. Seems like there ought to be some players there. I also imagine it would be worth trying whatever authentic French hangouts there are in the city as well.

I shall certainly investigate when I have more free time. Interestingly the FFT website lists no clubs outside France (well, in French dependencies also, but they count as France...) though the game is definitely played quite widely in Quebec, probably out of sheer bloodymindedness.
