Day 20 - The Character Who Is Most Like You
I actually was curious about this one. I think I have a pretty good understanding of myself but I asked a couple people (Kyle, Jasa, Mom, Dad, Sylvia) what they thought and, though I'm not exactly like any one character, I got basically the same two answers consistently.
(
have i mentioned i don't mind talking about myself? )
Your Rose meta is interesting, it's an interpretation I have not stumbled across before.
She's mad about him - she loves him, he's her best friend, he's the most important person in her life - so, in her mind, of course it's reciprocated. It better be.
...but... I mean... it is reciprocated. It's not like her perception exists in a vacuum based entirely on how she feels about him; she knows it's reciprocated because that's how he acts and how he treats her and she interprets things between them correctly (or within reason -- like her upset in School Reunion, it's not "how dare you not love me like I love you!", it's more "um if you don't then why have you treated me like you do?") I think there's a difference between being entitled, which is sort of how you describe her here, and just... having a healthy awareness that other people do care about you.
Martha, on the other hand, never believes herself to be that important to the Doctor because he doesn't treat her like she is. I suspect if he had treated her like he treated Rose she would be more confident with her place in his life -- or if he had acted as detached from Rose as he was from Martha, Rose would probably stop expecting, as you put it, to be important to him.
I guess my point, which you are free to disagree with, is that I'm not sure I would say Rose expects to be important to people versus Martha wanting to be important to people. I think Rose wants to (rather than expects to) as well, it's just that she's also aware when they do and we saw her in that situation more than we saw Martha in that situation. I don't think it's entitled to know that the person you love loves you back. (And I know you didn't call her entitled, that just seems like the best sum-up word for what you're talking about here.)

I dunno, I think that's more what I was trying to say. I might also just be talking in circles.
