Day 11 - Your Favourite Season (Classic or New)
I know there's been a lot of disclaimers flying around about people choosing s2 but how it's really not the best, and there are several bad episodes, and s4 is way better actually, etc. etc. First of all I say to those people: If your main reason for loving s2 is shipping Doctor/Rose, that's fine. I mean, why be embarrassed about it? They're the OTP of the universe, literally. People spend inordinate amounts of money to go see a movie just for a love story, and there it will only last for about 100 minutes. Doctor/Rose is, like, still coming up in s5. If you're gonna ship someone, clearly they're the ones to pick, is all I'm saying. But secondly, I just don't understand why everyone is so critical of ~those certain episodes~ in s2. Like...yeah, all right, sometimes there's flying lead squiggles and sometimes there's women whining from televisions, but I don't see how that's any more "...???" than, say, a half human/half dalek hybrid or pig people or obviouslynot!American girls. And s4 is absolutely a close second for my favorite season, but even there you've got the weird umbilical cord bizarreness going on in the Sontaran episodes, and the Hath in "The Doctor's Daughter." And, again, that's fine. Seriously, is anyone watching Doctor Who because the alien invasion scenarios are realistic? Doubtful.
All that to say that I don't care if nothing gets explained in "The Idiot's Lantern" or if the main characters are barely in "Love and Monsters" or if the plot of "Fear Her" looks like swiss cheese. Not loving those parts of s2 would be kind of like not loving Ten because sometimes he's a serious tool and sometimes he doesn't show enough mercy and sometimes he's delusional. Sometimes love is acceptance of flaws. And while that is an extremely dramatic way to justify loving every episode of s2...I do love every episode in s2. The whole season is by turns fun and intense and bright and ridiculous and tragic and redemptive and disappointing and gorgeous; full of love and life and all the light and dark sides thereof. And yes, in that way it's a mirror of the relationship between Ten and Rose, but I think that's beautiful.

The Master is kind of like a ten-year-old experimenting with What It Means To Be Evil, and I love that. There's not much method to his madness except, apparently, pushing Ten's buttons. That kind of motivation does two things for him as a character: 1) makes him really evil, because it's not as though there's any ambition or grander purpose of any kind. There's a shortage of characters like this - people who are bad just for the sake of being bad. I really appreciate that there's no ~moral lesson~ with the Master. Anyway, 2) makes all of his actions easily acceptable. Aging Ten, jamming to bad pop, generally being completely insane...all of that's okay, because he's basically just doing any of that to be a total brat. Plus, John Simm is just stunning, in my book. It's so easy to enjoy the Master as a character. I was secretly hoping a tiny bit that he'd be back at the end of s5, because even though that would be like "UGH REALLY IS HE JUST GOING TO BE IN EVERY FINALE FROM NOW TIL THE END OF TIME" (lolpunintended) it also would have meant, you know, more Master!
