A super long time ago
zombres did this on her journal, and I shocked everyone by forgetting about it for a few weeks or a month or so. But now, a few weeks or a month or so later, here are my answers to the five questions I got!
1. Who's your absolute favourite author, and your favourite book by them?
For sheer prettiness of prose, my favorite is Nicole Krauss. She is absolutely a master of the English language and making it seem less a functional necessity, more a fine art. My favorite of her books is A History of Love. My favorite unique storyteller is Jaclyn Moriarty, who's written some really incredibly clever epistolary YA novels, my favorite of which is The Year of Secret Assignments. I think my absolute favorite author, at least right now, is Courtney Summers, another YA novelist who just...takes her characters to some really dark places, but in such a respectful, real way. My favorite of her novels is Cracked Up To Be, which is also her first novel.
2. Who do you think you relate to the most in Harry Potter?
This is hard for me to say, because I haven't read the books in so long. I remember reading Hermione's line about how Harry has a "saving people thing" and that really resonated with me at the time, but I think for better of for worse I've lost some of that. I think...I think I would say Hermione. She tends to not be very gracious with people when she knows more about something than they do, and she is actually a bit easily frustrated with people in general, I think. And I think for a lot of the series Hermione kind of was afraid that all she brought to the table was "books and cleverness" and that that wasn't as valuable or as important as Harry's friendship and bravery or Ron's love and loyalty, but she had those things, too, when it counted. I think she loved deeply but was kind of constantly nervous about her love not being right or not being reciprocated, and I think she was willing to fight fiercely for the things and people she believed in, even if she might be outmatched. So yeah, I'll say Hermione.
3. Your first fandom? Was it the first one you wrote fic for, too?
Aside from constantly playing Power Rangers (I was Pink; I'm not proud), Pokemon (I was Charmander; I'm super proud) and Digimon (I WAS EVERYONE AT SOME POINT, DIGIMON FOREVER) in my friend's backyard as a wee thing, Harry Potter was my first fandom. And it was the first fandom I wrote fic for, though I think mostly I just put together block quotes from roleplays and published them to FF.Net. They are not good and no one will ever see them. I also was known to write the odd Spider-Man fic back in the day, but again, they are mercifully lost to the interwebs.
4. If you could pick the next historical figure to guest-star in Doctor Who, who would it be?
I almost said QE1 because she is my FAVORITE historical figure, but I guess she kind of already has her place in Doctor Who canon, and I honestly don't want to see that QE1. So I think I'd like a music episode! Maybe Team TARDIS could meet Beethoven and have hilarious hearing-impaired hijinks and then a heartfelt he-was-still-so-brilliant moment at the end, or maybe a more lighthearted Mozart episode where Amelia Jessica Pond smacks Wolfgang Amadeus around a little and tells him to stop being such a douche. Only that would have to be s5 Amy, I guess, so let's go with Beethoven. Or maybe Ralph Vaughan Williams. I don't know but I want this music episode really bad now, let's make it happen. And have Richard Curtis write it. And Tony Curran can play the artist. Hell, let's just have another Van Gogh episode. Please.
5. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
I have to admit I don't have any big exciting answers for this. In fact I'm just going to copy and paste what I said to Rachel in response to something like this on a tumblr meme yesterday!
I would be interested in briefly living in London. Like for longer than a vacation, but much shorter than a permanent engagement. I think being there too short a time doesn’t give a real sense of what it’s like to be a person there as opposed to being a tourist there, but being there too long would definitely disenchant me and that would break my heart. On a more permanent basis, I would love to keep living in the VA/NC/SC area because I really do love it here. But, having lived in the mountains and on the coast, I would like to try settling somewhere along a river or a lake. Kind of a random lifelong dream of mine, having a house on the waterfront. But not a beachhouse, because again with the tourist vs. disenchantment thing. I don’t know why I think that wouldn’t happen with a different body of water?…
Hurray! Sorry about the boring answers, Angie B!
