I've been watching Joan of Arcadia lately, and I think that the thing that strikes me most about Joan is that she's so 16. She's not my favorite character on TV ever, and not even my favorite on the show, but she's for the most part very realistically written. She whines like a 16-year-old and fights with her parents and siblings, and is selfish and self-centered like most teenagers--and then she comes out with these moments of incredible empathy and sensitivity to others, which is a lot of what being a teenager is about, I think.

I don't necessarily relate to her in the same way that I did to, say, Rory throughout Gilmore Girls, because Rory was closer to my age and circumstance (although still a few years younger), and also because I was significantly younger when I started watching GG, but I see shades of myself at that age in her, and I see hints of most of the 16-year-olds I've ever known or worked with.
