Well, Colin should be somewhere in the air right now--his flight was supposed to leave at 11:50, and it's now 12:30, and I haven't heard anything, so I'm assuming that everything went as planned and he's on his way home.
It was a good weekend. The show went well (although it feels like it closed ages ago now), and I was so ready for it to be over. I was also incredibly glad that it closed on a Friday night instead of Saturday. Having Saturday free (since it was our only day with nothing scheduled) was great, even though we didn't actually sleep in after getting to bed at 4 after the strike the night before.
So. What else did the weekend consist of? Well, one thing that it didn't consist of was Colin doing my grocery shopping and cooking. ;o) He was really sticking to that whole "I'm on vacation" mentality--not that I blame him, since usually it's the other way around, and I'm the one on vacation while he still has to go to work. And when he has to go to work while I'm in town, he's at work all day, working a normal schedule, whereas I have such an erratic schedule that this weekend was mostly a few hours here and there for a class or show or work or some other commitment. Some, he came with me for (he sat in on my Foundations of Producing class), and others, he just stayed home for, but it's a different kind of schedule.
Anyway, on Saturday, we went to Disneyland for the day--hence the "not sleeping until mid-afternoon" portion of the day. We weren't even close to making it through everything, but as Colin pointed out, we'll be at Disneyland many, many times over the years (and when people are coming to visit and we're getting the seasons passes, we can take advantage of the fact that season's passes are significantly cheaper for SoCal residents. Single admissions, not so much). Pictures (we didn't take many, but there are a few) are still on my camera; I'll post those when I get home tonight.
On our last ride of the night, we ended up in line behind a group of high-school students who were all there together (probably 20 or so in line in front of us), and they doing the "Heeeeyyyyyy!" thing whenever another member of their group walked by, which we all remember from our own high school days, right? Colin and I did, at least. Anyway, the last guy in line turned to apologize for being noisy, and when he found out that Colin was visiting from Canada, kept rhapsodizing about meeting a Canadian and how it was the best day of his life, because he'd met a Canadian. Yeah, I think he was a little tipsy. Possibly just hyper, but there was more likely some alcohol involved. In any case, we felt a little old, realizing that we were more likely to be chaperones than participants in a group like that.
Sunday, we went to church in the morning, and then Carol had all the MFA1 Producers (and significant others) over for brunch, which was so yummy. So, so yummy, and a lot of fun. Colin had met the other MFA1s at various points over the weekend, but that was a chance to really see how we all interact and to get to know them a bit better. They'd all heard so much about him (I think that every introduction this weekend started with, "Colin, this is so-and-so; so-and-so, this is Colin." "Hi Colin! I've heard so much about you!"), and I think it was good for everyone to get to put faces to names.
Side note: It was so good for him to be down here again. I needed that, as much as anything else. Last time he was here, there were no connections. I mean, it was all getting settled, and that was its own kind of necessary. It was good for him to have his bearings in the neighborhood and near the school as much as I did, and for him to be as comfortable in the apartment as I was. This time, though, it was more about meeting people and integrating back into this world where he's such a present entity, even though he's not physically here.
Anyway, after brunch, we went home and watched some Dead Like Me, which I'll take back with me over spring break, so we can finish it. Maybe. It looks like we'll have quite a few evenings booked with various things, but we'll make time to just hang out and watch TV.
Yesterday morning, I had class, and then took a nap in the afternoon (since Colin got to sleep in while I went to class), and in the evening we went and saw Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day. Very cute; I less-than-three Lee Pace and Amy Adams.
And... that was the weekend. There were moments involving an actor screaming bloody murder from the girls' bathroom, a beyond-clueless house manager on Friday night (I think that Colin, without knowing the procedures for the school or anything, could have done it better than she did), many dinners after midnight, hand-dipped corn dogs, geeking out about production value and performative nature, and so on and so forth, but in a nutshell, that was the weekend.
Colin and Mariah both gave me roses last week; Mariah left them on my pillow the night before she saw the show, and Colin brought some to me in the office on Thursday, so I have two dozen roses on the kitchen table. Pretty! (The dozen from Colin is opening up really nicely; the dozen from Mariah isn't faring so well, unfortunately.)
It's only 10 days until I'm in Calgary. Weirdly enough, I come back from Calgary 3 weeks from today. It's kind of odd that our next visit is that soon, and then after that, it's really only 6 weeks until he's back down here to drive up for the summer. I realized today, though, that we did really, really well this year at not going much more than 2 months at a time without seeing each other. It could have been a lot worse, and yes, some of those two-month periods felt a lot longer, but really, that's pretty manageable. I think that the longest stretch was from Canadian Thanksgiving to Christmas break, which was just over 2 months. And if we did it this year, with our financial situation the way it was, we should be able to continue it next year, after getting things a bit more settled over the summer and feeling a little bit more financially stable.
Guess it's time to start actually working on my summer job, now that the show is over. They wanted me to start part-time from here on March 1, and it's a bit later now, so it's time to start reviewing contracts and getting a crash course in unions. I suppose that also means I need to go to Target and buy a big binder for it. I love how being in the theatre equals having shelves and shelves full of binders, since that's how everything's organized show by show.
Anyway, my box office shift is almost over, and then I get to go down to the Starbucks training office for my re-training that I missed (when all the stores across the country were closed) because, well, I was in production. Fun times, hey? At least it'll be over early, and I'll be home by 8:30. That's not so bad.
