Irene nearly dropped her phone -- it was a very close thing, but she was quite practiced at making sure she didn't damage that particular piece of technology.

She wanted to say something clever, of course, but all she managed to come up with was, "Sherlock?"

There was the faintest twitch of a smile at that. For a variety of reasons that did not need be ventured into at this juncture.

"You look well."

"So do you." Irene's shock was wearing off enough now that she was examining her locks with vague interest, though she clearly was having a hard time taking her eyes off him on her couch. In her apartment. Here. "Why're you here?"

"You're teaching now," Sherlock said, bypassing the question entirely.

"And you've clearly done your homework," she returned, arching a brow at him. Some of her composure was returning, at least.

"No, I expect you've always done your homework," she said, leaning a hip against the wall. She still wasn't quite ready to make the first move towards the couch. "Most people might've called ahead, you know."

"So you're here to visit, then?" she asked, because that was what she was really interested in. "No emergency, my cover's not blown?"

"If your cover was blown," Sherlock said, standing up and every so casually walking toward her. "I doubt those locks would stop them."

"I'll get new locks, if you're so worried about me," she said softly, watching him carefully.

Sherlock looked as though he wanted very much to refute that, but bit his tongue as it would do no good in this instance. "Working with teenagers. How exciting for you."

Irene shrugged slightly, smiling easily. "It passes the time. You didn't happen to look up what I'm teaching, did you?"
