that's not my name

So the other day, my mom and I were having a discussion on various pet names/terms of endearment. James had called me and I answered with "Yes dear" as I've taken to doing and my mom went into this rant about such things. She finds terms of endearment to be rude, in any situation. I tend to not even notice them when they come from complete strangers (i.e. restaurant servers, cashiers, etc.), appreciate them when they come from friends/family but get slightly annoyed when they come from acquaintances (people I know by name, but have no other relationship with). I like to be complicated. :)

But anyway...I've noticed that ever since I moved back from New York, I've taken to saying things like "hon" and "sweetie" and "dear" a lot. I don't always notice when I do it, but I only ever do it to friends/family. But after my mother's rant, I wondered if other people feel the same way she does. And I know there've been a few times when I've said something like "Thanks, hon" or "I'm sorry, sweetie" on here and I figured it might be a good idea to know if it bothers people.

So...POLL! I included the terms I've heard most often. And I separated "Hon" from "Honey" and "Sweetie" from "Sweetheart" because, personally, I think there's a difference. Feel free to add more in the little text box or in the comments. Click away!
