we are the next time ‘round

Every time Simon watches Daphne dance with another man, it gets harder and harder for him to pretend he isn’t jealous.

It’s happening more and more now. Daphne’s dance card always fills up within minutes of making her entrance, and she is never without at least two or three hopeful suitors who wish to fetch her lemonade. When Simon suggested their little arrangement, he never imagined it would be this successful.

He doesn’t begrudge her the attention as no one could be more deserving, but he would caution Anthony against letting her accept any of these new suitors. (If Anthony would deign to speak to him, that is.) Although Simon still has no idea how it happened -- other than fear of her three overprotective older brothers -- the fact of the matter is that none of these new suitors had noticed Daphne before he came along, and that means that none of them can possibly be worthy of her.

At present, she is dancing with some Lord whose name Simon would rather not know, although she seems happy enough. He catches her laugh at something her partner says, watches as her face lights up and and can imagine the twinkle in her dark eyes. Stubbornly, he tells himself that she is just being polite and she does not feel anything but friendship for her partner, and at least for now, that is probably true.

The real problem is that one day, Daphne’s partner will be someone worthy, someone who makes her laugh and smile more than Simon does, and he will have to face that when it happens. But Simon wants her, even though he knows it isn’t fair. He wants her more than he’s wanted anything, except perhaps his father’s approval.

(He didn’t get that, either.)

In another life, maybe he could be the man to give her everything she wants, but there are some things in this life he cannot change. Still, it’s a beautiful picture that lies just beyond his reach. Simon can see it now as clear as day.

The dance ends. Across the ballroom floor, she catches his eye and smiles.

In another life, he should be so lucky.
