It is Another Thing - The Sun Also Rises - Brett/JakenorgbelulahOctober 21 2011, 04:47:05 UTC
Sometimes Jake thinks Brett is made of smoke.
It permeates the air around her in chains and rings of rich, bitter air. When she talks, she pulls her hands through it, making those chains thicker with the wave of every cigarette laden finger. When she laughs it seems to echo back around her, intensifying her volume, her reach.
Jake doesn't mind so much. If he thinks of that smoke as a barrier, as a wall between them, maybe he could feel better about it.
But her eyes are somehow still bright behind that fog and when they meet his and when she smiles, not at anyone else, when she smiles just at him, all of it clears away.
She sidles over to him, secrecy and discretion in her face, and offers him a smoke. He takes it, knowing he shouldn't. He lets his lip quirk into that half-smile she told him once she liked a great deal.
He thinks she might as well have lit the damn thing and drove it deep into his flesh for all the fire she's put into him without a way for it to burn through.
That fire can't ever be quenched, but he doesn't know how to stop her from lighting up.
All she does, all she is, is smoke waiting to blaze.
