THIS POLL IS NOT LATE, WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? LOOK OVER THERE!

1. Name of book. Through Black Spruce by Joseph Boyden
2. Small blurb about the book. Will Bird is a legendary Cree bush pilot, now lying in a coma in a hospital in his hometown of Moose Factory, Ontario. His niece Annie Bird, beautiful and self-reliant, has returned from her own perilous journey to sit beside his bed. Broken in different ways, the two take silent communion in their unspoken kinship, and the story that unfolds is rife with heartbreak, fierce love, ancient blood feuds, mysterious disappearances, plane crashes, murders, and the bonds that hold a family, and a people, together. As Will and Annie reveal their secrets-the tragic betrayal that cost Will his family; Annie's desperate search for her missing sister, the famous model, Suzanne-a remarkable saga of resilience and destiny takes shape. From the dangerous bush country of Northern Ontario to the drug-fuelled glamour of the Manhattan club scene, Joseph Boyden tracks his characters with a keen eye and a rare empathy for the empty places concealed within the heart. Through Black Spruce establishes Boyden as a writer of startling originality and uncommon power.
3. Why this book is awesome. This is one of books I had to read during my MA year, and it ended up being my favourite thing we read all year, and one of my all time favourite books. It's just spectacularly written, and the story unfolds in such a captivating and original way. The main characters are compelling and intriguing, and I just love it so much. I'd love to share it with all of you, and bring some CanCon into this community! ;)

1. Name of book. The Monstrumologist by Rick Yancey
2. Small blurb about the book. These are the secrets I have kept. This is the trust I never betrayed.

But he is dead now and has been for more than forty years, the one who gave me his trust, the one for whom I kept these secrets.

The one who saved me...and the one who cursed me.

So begins the journal of Will Henry, orphaned assistant to Dr. Pellinore Warthrop, a man with a most unusual specialty: monstrumology, the study of monsters. In his time with the doctor, Will has met many a mysterious late-night visitor, and seen things he never imagined were real. But when a grave robber comes calling in the middle of the night with a gruesome find, he brings with him their most deadly case yet.

3. Why this book is awesome. This is one of the best horror and scientific books I've read in the past... hell, forever. It's this amazing story, told from the tattered folios from the journal of one Will Henry, 12-year-old assistant to a mysterious doctor of monstrumology. It combines the best of creature mythology with suspense, horror, scientific discovery, human nature, and a great setting in late 1888 in the New England area. Best of all, it's genuinely gripping and engrossing, one of those books you can't put down. And while I've read quite a bit of horror and mystery, it kept me guessing and more than slightly terrified at places. Yancey has a great grasp of language, making Will Henry's accounts almost poetic in places, with a great ability for pacing. This book never feels dull.

And the sequels are just as good- and even more terrifying and intense.

1. Name of book. Heist Society by Ally Carter
2. Small blurb about the book. From Booklist via Amazon:

After a childhood spent assisting her father, one of the world’s most talented art thieves, Katarina Bishop tries to leave the family business behind when she forges her way into a New England boarding school. She quickly discovers, though, that her past is inescapable. Her father has been accused of stealing already stolen masterpieces from a dangerous Italian billionaire. Certain that her father is innocent, Kat resolves to find the missing paintings and return them to their unsavory owner, who has given her a two-week deadline. Carter, the author of the Gallagher Girls series, skillfully maintains suspense as Kat assembles a team of teen accomplices, travels across Europe, and plots an impossible art heist to save her dad.
3. Why this book is awesome. TEENAGE ART THIEVES. You can't tell me that doesn't appeal to you, I won't believe you. But really, this book is just a lot of fun, if totally ridiculous, even though it doesn't think that it's ridiculous. Plus, it's got a great cast of supporting characters and if you're not screaming for makeouts by the end of the book, there's something wrong where your heart should be.
