I'm thinking of re-reading Sense & Sensibility since it's the Austen book I tend to avoid. I saw the movie before reading the book and I really didn't like the Emma Thompson adaption, which is considered blasphemous in some circles but whatever. Also thinking of re-watching the BBC adaptions that came out a few years ago since they were really well made and do the books justice.
I'm currently reading The Calculus Diaries by Jennifer Ouellet (I know, nerd alert). It's about the application of math in daily life explored through the author attempting to get over her fear of calculus. It's super informative, interesting all while being hilarious. She also wrote a book called The Physics of Buffyverse which I want to eventually check out.
On a last note IT'S FINALLY WARM AND SUNNY HERE! YAY FOR SPRING!
The 2008 S&S is great, it's so beautiful. I like the Thompson adaptation too but the actors are a tad too old so it's wonky. Plus, who doesn't want Emma Thompson to end up with Alan Rickman? It breaks the whole story ;)
It really was. Watching it was the first time, aside from reading the book, that I actually felt for the characters and cheered for the "right" couple! Plus, who doesn't want Emma Thompson to end up with Alan Rickman? It breaks the whole story ;) EXACTLY! Her and Hugh Grant just didn't for me at all.
I really love the 2008 S&S. Possibly more than the 95 one? I can't really decide. The Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman thing really does bother me about the 95 version. I can't NOT want them together. It's practically programmed in me.
I want to like the Emma Thompson version, because the screenplay really is great, but Emma was WAY TOO OLD to be Elinor. And it's inconceivable to root for her NOT to end up with Alan Rickman. It's like science.
I haven't seen a lot of the latest adaptations yet and am planning on trying to get some of them in this month. I want to see how they mucked up the end of Persuasion. And to see if Billie Piper can manage to make me like Fanny Price. My suspicion is no, much as I love her.
I adored the latest Persuasion. Wentworth is dreamy. Plus, King Giles is there! But I absolutely hated the Billie Piper Mansfield Park - possibly my least favorite adaptations (and the only one of the '00s adaptations that isn't great). I know we all hate Fanny Price but she is just not Fanny at all - she's kind of ditzy and runs around all the time and wow, that is not Fanny. Have you seen the Frances O'Connor adaptation? It's great and much better than the book, heh. Fanny is proper but they had a little bit of cynical/Jane Austen in her and it's fantastic.
I'm anticipating loving everything but the ending. The end of Persuasion is one of my favorite endings of anything ever, so it's very unlikely anything but a word by word recreation would please me.
I have seen that one (and own it). It's actually what got me to finish the book. I told Tori that she should watch that and then go back to trying to read it, because the movie helps play up the scandalous parts. The trying to make Fanny Austen is the only thing I don't like about it.
They were all way too old! Except Alan Rickman. lol But yeah, as much as the screenplay, acting and everything else was great, the actor's ages just made it not work for me.
Yeah Billie Piper didn't do it for me as Fanny Price. I think it was good but the 1999 is definitely the best one out there.
They were, but Emma was the worst and then to have her be paired up with the obviously younger Hugh Grant, just no. It's not a visually pleasing movie for that reason, and it always makes me read the book shipping the wrong things.
(Which is actually the problem with the 1999 adaptation. How was I NOT supposed to ship Henry Crawford with Fanny? It's impossible, I tell you.)
I really enjoy the 2007 Persuasion. The 1995 one is far more accurate in terms of the book, so I obviously love that one too, but I can't help it. The 2007 one is just so PRETTY. Rupert Penry-Jones was born to be Wentworth. I can't even explain it. He's so great in the role, and so is Sally Hawkins, that I can forgive the flaws (and they're definitely there). It's not a long one, so you should try it.
I haven't seen the new Emma or Mansfield Park, so I suspect I may try to watch both of those this month. I really enjoy the 1999 MP, and I'm actually one of the few people who liked Fanny (although not nearly as much as some of the other Austen heroines). Catherine Morland is the one I've never fully warmed up to.
I really love the 1995 one for how not conventionally attractive everyone is? I actually believe Wentworth has been to sea and that Anne is an on the shelf spinster. But I'm very much looking forward to seeing it.
The one I really want to see is the most recent S&S, because I'm sort of in love with Dan Stevens. I'm hoping that proper casting will help me get into a S&S movie.
I agree about the 1995 one. Even though they're a little bit older than I'd originally pictured, the fact that they're not conventionally attractive does make it feel more realistic. It's such a good adaptation in general. I found it for sale at Target a few months ago, so now I own it and can watch it whenever I want! I just love Persuasion so much. I reread it this fall for the first time in years, and since then, I think I've read it twice more.
I love the 2008 S&S! The Dashwoods all really LOOK like they're siblings, which I feel is pretty rare on TV a lot of the time. I thought it was really well done all around.
I uploaded some this week, but I'm looking for more.

IDK, I don't mind the Austen thing. Fanny is so boring otherwise.

(I need some Austen icons, apparently.)
