Fifty-three percent of those surveyed in 1999 by the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt University think the press has too much freedom. Only 65 percent said papers should be able to publish a story without government approval -- down from 80 percent in 1997. Sizable majorities also believe the news media shouldn't be allowed to endorse or criticize political candidates, use hidden cameras for newsgathering (okay, I agree with that one), or publish government secrets
