Notes - I might forgive them if they did something along these lines. But probably not.

It’s mid-afternoon, late, early, early evening - not sure. There’s still sun but I’m not sure how long it will last, I don’t know how quickly it will blacken and crisp up and smoke out of chimneys in small houses with well-fed children in them.

They’re watching Neighbours. Or they’re waiting for Neighbours to come on.

My friends are talking about airports and how they never thought we’d end up here, even though we’re in the same park I’ve walked through every day, the one with the nice wooden benches and the pond I thought I could forget.

My friends are people I never really got to know.

Maybe I know Katie, maybe. I know a version of her. I know her with angel-wings. I love her with angel-wings.

I love Cook but he’s not here.

I love him because…

He’s not here because…

Pandora’s waving. It’s funny, because she’s sitting right next to me.

I should give her Pato when I go. Or when she goes or whichever comes first, obviously. They’d be perfect. Perfect for each other. He likes holding hands. He likes…

Thomas is calling out. They’re talking about airports again and Panda is running like a giraffe.

I love her. I love… people who aren’t here. People who are leaving. People who aren't coming -

I wanted to love Emily and Naomi, but I dropped them somewhere along the way. I dropped something and I missed it all - all the brokenness, all the waiting, all the times they felt stupid and crazy, all the times they wished they could get it right before it all went wrong again.

And now they're beautiful.

They are beautiful in this light, smiling at the end of the tunnel.

(Like a rocket.

Straight out the top.)

JJ grew a girlfriend and a baby. JJ cut his hair. It’s not Hiroshima anymore, it’s not…

Effy closes her eyes. When she opens them everyone is still there. Birds chirp tunelessly, laughter flickers through trees. Her friends are talking about airports and how they never thought they’d end up here in this park she has walked through every day and never seen a pond in.

The bomb did not go off.

The van did not hit Tony.

Cook shows up and the word ‘bar’ is added to ‘airport’. He looks her way, tips a new hat she shakes her head at.

She gives him the finger, she blows him a kiss.

Sweet.

The sun is still out.

Neighbours hasn’t started when Freddie jogs toward her, cardy a’billowing.

He’s beautiful in this light, smiling at the end of the tunnel.

Effy smiles back.

Quick! Before it’s too late.

effy/cook, effy/freddie, effy stonem, skins, everyone
