Something In Your Eyes
by cozzybob

Pair: Zechs and Relena

Warning: pre-series, angst. maybe a little stalker-ness. (Now there's a thought--stalker!Zechs!! I. Would. Pay. To see that.)

Note: For the beat_of_destiny challenge, #64, "something in your eyes." Still working on that stalker!Noin thing. This bit me during work the other day, though. ^^;

Summary: Zechs discovers that Relena has long forgotten her brother's existence.

He knew he shouldn't have, but he needed to do it. He needed to see her. So on the next leave of the Academy, Zechs purchased a flight to New Edwards and drove to Darlian's current home by nothing more sophisticated than a cab.

Once they arrived, he told the cab driver to wait.

But he hadn't gotten out of the car.

"You goin' or what?" In the mirror, the driver was annoyed, and Zechs saw him drumming his fingers on the steering wheel in the way some doctors would dictate that sure starting signs of road rage. He was a big man, and vaguely Nazi-like with the blonde-blue-eyed glaring going on, but even young, Zechs was the last person on the planet to be intimidated. He said nothing, and so the driver felt the need to repeat himself. "Yo! Kid! You goin' or--"

"No."

"No?"

He didn't answer. He waited. In the mirror, the cab driver knew he was without choice in the matter and rolled his eyes, waiting as well, muttering about obscure fares on very long days.

And then she came.

Walking home from school, four books held in her crossed fists, her dark eyes focused solely at the sidewalk where her thoughts must have rested. There were friends and they followed her like a flock of paparazzi, but somehow, she seemed isolated and unhappy with their attentions. It was a brooding silence that surrounded her, much like his own--her friends spoke, but she said nothing to them. As he watched her, there was no doubt of their relation, no matter how many worlds apart they currently tred. She carried herself like a Peacecraft who had lost everything but the confusions of every day life.

She looked right into his eyes.

It had only been for a handful of seconds, where she stared at him, and he stared back at her. But then she frowned, as if trying to remember a face she couldn't place, and it would be first time that he would discover that she didn't know him at all. It was foolish to assume that she'd remember... that was time and his life. Time's bidding for a girl who'd only been two, his life for being the bastard love child of war and peace that it was.

But he had hoped, and his sister had forgotten him. He felt betrayed, and it was then that he began to hate, even in his love for her.

Her friends stopped, and asked her what was wrong.

She said nothing. Nothing at all.

And she looked away.

He watched her walk home, away from his cab.

To the Darlians.
