The trouble with chairs...

Sep 18, 2004 14:30

I only meant to pop in to the Gorham Goodwill this afternoon...you know...just take a spin around for the little things I collect. I was finding them hand over fist and putting them in my cart...when I saw it... the chair...

I almost missed it because it was behind a couch, but I happened to catch a glimpse of yellow and stainless steel, so I poked my head around...

It may be the coolest chair EVER! No holes, no stains...no rust...all the little feet in tact...and...get this... it was made by the Simmons mattress company, so the seat, underneath the cool yellow vinyl, is a tiny Simmons mattress!!!

Blood rushed through my head...I felt a little woozy even... then I saw the price... $19.95!! Some days, the heavens open up and drop a present right in my lap.

So I flipped her over and wheeled her to the counter (putting back all the other crap I had wanted before) and I bought her. Keep in mind here that it's raining outside.

So I ask the woman if I can leave it there until I clean out my trunk and pull the car up to the building. Up to this point, the trunk on my Ford Focus has been nothing short of a miracle. So I go back, get the chair and start hauling it outside... noting it is awkwardly shaped and constructed to withstand the atom bomb.
(Side note: NO ONE offered to help me. I had to ask people to open doors for me. Sheesh.)

I tried every conceivable way to fit that thing in my car: trunk...back seat...front seat. Nothing. And I'm all dressed up (because I had a work function that morning), so I'm standing in a puddle in good shoes. At this point, I begin laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation and can no longer hold the chair up anymore.

Back in it went (thank goodness it's waterproof!) and I asked the ladies to hold it for me until tomorrow. So, thank you in advance to bumblebaker for agreeing to drive back out there tomorrow with his lovely truck to get it.

Part two of the chair adventure and pictures forthcoming.
