On a winter morning they go out and walk around the park, watching the people and the world in these moments they aren’t the ones being watched through the many eyes of Hero TV. The kids play ball games here and there, young couples sit on benches-or rather, some people sit on their special someones while they sit on the bench-and the occasional geriatric solitary figure walks slowly leaning on a cane. They only stop in front of a cart to buy coffee that still exudes white tendrils of steam. It’s not that good, but at least it serves to warm their hands and soothe their chapped lips.
Kotetsu says he feels like climbing a tree, running, anything to put his muscles to use, but Ivan just laughs and says he simply isn’t cut out for that today. Tomorrow, maybe-just not today. They sit on one of the benches left vacant from the couples.
“I’m sure you don’t need another way to risk mangling yourself any more, you old man.”
He says it like it’s a private nickname with a story known only to them, but still maintaining a subtle tone of mockery. It’s not like he doesn’t like the old man. But it’s okay, Kotetsu starts humming some classic English song, messing up some foreign words here and there, Ivan chuckles, and so does Kotetsu. The Wild Tiger’s scrawny fingers tap on his lap, moving to Ivan’s thigh to the rhythm of the melody.
Something happens when some kids rush in front of them, bringing a handful of the usual hero cards which they generally collect-hell, even Kaede had one of Barnaby, her darling savior. They laugh and they discuss heroes just like those many conversations Kotetsu listens to when he goes drinking with Antonio. Those can get pretty chaotic quickly, more so when slipping out of drunken lips. But with the kids it’s different; they generally agree that Barnaby and Sky High are the best heroes around.
“No, Blue Rose is the best, she’s so pretty!” Says one of them, excitedly waving the card of Karina’s persona in his hand.
“Aww, I got Origami Cyclone…” Drawls a freckled kid, and the disappointment in his voice is so much it almost seems to Kotetsu the cloudy puffs of his breath sink as they leave his mouth.
The kids go away, and Ivan draws a foot up to the edge of the bench, sips the last of his coffee, his entire stance pretending indifference. Kotetsu thinks he is too cute and maybe beautiful too. He brings a hand to ruffle Ivan’s perfectly styled hair, and says, “Don’t worry; I’m still Origami Cyclone’s number one fan.”
Ivan’s breath leaves him in puffs as he chuckles, looking too precious, and he whispers, “I don’t know, Origami Cyclone is a bit too obscure for kids their age to understand.” The blond nudges Kotetsu’s hand off and smiles.
They are used to being the underdogs, by now.
