A/N: weird au creature, this one. o.o i'm sorry if i snatched your prompt and made it something completely weird, bb. ;__; i hope you enjoy, though.

Kurogane watches as Fai takes an apple from the basket, fetches a knife from the drawer and proceeds to cut it and then peel it. It’s rather methodical, simple, almost medical. His eyes take in the way how Fai’s pale, so pale hands hold the vivant green of the apple and run the sharp blade so that a thin, frail peel is drawn. Fai does it quickly, with practiced movements, and places the diseased rests on a neat pile while Kurogane does nothing but stare, stare and stare. Of course, it isn’t just about apples. Juicy green apples.

And Kurogane’s thinking about the things he’s heard from the women from his village, how they’d whisper monotonous strings of religious excerpts, that the apple was the sin; the apple was temptation, the forbidden fruit. He doesn’t generally share this view of the fruit, but for just this once, he’s ready to indulge. He feels it when the intense smell starts oozing into the air around him, until all is Fai in his eyes and all is apple in his nose. He can’t help but notice the breath that gets caught up in the knots and butterflies of his throat when the blond takes in a bite into his mouth.

After a moment, and looking rather pleased, Fai says, “I’ve always loved apples, you know?” The smile on his lips either foretells something incredibly silly or melancholic. “Just close to my bedroom window there used to be this large apple tree, and every late summer I managed to reach out a pluck a handful of them.” He chuckles. “Weird, what we remember, right, Kuro-pon?” Yes. Weird how Kurogane remembers things he’s never lived. Recollections from past lives or dreams. How they used to travel, the two of them together, how Fai was helplessly broken and how Kurogane was too; he’s sure they’re still like that now, under different skins, in different worlds and times. How Kurogane’s most cherished memory is Fai’s smile and the soft feathery touch of his hair.

Apparently, Fai’s talking about this apple that he’d stolen with his brother, and that was the most delicious apple he remembers eating. And he smiles, adding, “One day I’ll bring you some. I promise.”

It’s a promise.

And Kurogane won’t mind waiting for it like he waits for everything else. Even if it’ll be another time, another place, in another life. They will always converge and maybe always sit at a table and discuss apples, because soulmates are just like that, converging no matter what. He’ll be waiting.
