Nezumi’s always been perfectly happy with how the skin works, like a perfect, unharmed shield. It keeps him whole in the inside-or at least it doesn’t let the broken pieces of him peeled throughout the years run away. It keeps everyone else on the outside, too, and that’s more that happily welcomed. It’s always been that way, and he can’t allow himself to feel any other way about it. It has to be, or else he’ll start to wonder what it’s like to open just a single breach and let someone in.
And then there’s Shion. The odd point in the grand scheme of things. He sits there smiling and giving him nice words and trying his best to make this world outside his dear No.6 better, even if it spits him out at every effort. Nezumi can’t help but laugh at this.
He laughs, but then there is a little bit of rage as well.
Because Shion dares to bury himself under the shield of Nezumi’s skin so tenderly and nicely like he belongs there.
(And he does.)
Because Shion dares to be nestled in a place deep inside Nezumi’s heart-which he forgot was there, cold and forgotten and gathering dust-and worming his way into a place he doesn’t belong.
(But he does.)
Because Shion dares to tip his head to the side and stare longingly at him with those brown eyes of his under the light of their single lantern, and manages to tell him that they’ll make it through together without saying anything.
(And they will.)
Because Shion dares to infect his whole world with a need and longing so deep it hurts, when he invades Nezumi with all things Shion-his scent and his touch and his helpless quality-leans in to kiss him goodnight. And even though he lies to Nezumi, it’s because Shion wants to protect him.
(Even if it should be Nezumi doing that.)
But, most of all, it angers him because Shion dares to bare his heart to him and come out alright, whereas Nezumi knows that if he did as he, he’d only be able to show him dusty broken pieces that would chase Shion and his affections away. It angers Nezumi because Shion belongs in the warm place inside his heart, and even though Nezumi wants to keep him in there, he knows he won’t be able to protect Shion.

Thank you for writing, and noooo, fail!characterization is not fail. I think you portrayed them perfectly, what's with Nezumi's subtle envy of Shion and conflicting emotions about wanting to be with Shion or let him live happier somewhere far, far away because he's at once selfish and selfless and aaaaakshdkhakdadsh ;_;
