today i helped to get my excellent young friend/mentee Ian into the accelerated IB program at the best public school in Baltimore. that might not sound like a lot, but given that it took three fucking months to get an appointment (my stepdad even had to call in a favor with someone) and it only took them five minutes to accept him to the program (they didn't even test him, they didn't so much as look at his transcripts!! he just comes across as that gifted), i was pretty blown away. he's been home schooled for three years, and he had no way to get into this program unless we beat down the doors, which we did. there is virtually no chance of getting into this school unless you can go through the official channels, which are very mired in bureaucracy and filling out forms in triplicate and deadlines and shit. when we mentioned that the school secretaries had tried to turn us away on the basis of the deadline having passed, the admissions director literally made a note of it and told us he was going to "have a talk" with the secretaries! this guy wanted Ian SO BAD. i knew he would, i fucking knew that if we could just get in the door, everything would fall into place. his mother cried for about two hours from the sheer overwhelm of this event. seriously, the acceptance rate to this program is probably less than 5%.
he is a smart, smart, smart kid.
he is maybe the best thing about my job, and he has almost nothing to do with my job. he has siblings at my school, and attended it for half a year. because of this vague connection to my job, i am able to take time off work any time i need to in order to do shit with him and get him what he needs in terms of attention/opportunities. everyone at the school knows and worships him. i gleefully imparted the good news to one teacher at the school at 2pm, and by 3pm the entire school knew.
man, today was a good day. this kid, being so extraordinary, would end up in the ivy league no matter what, but now i don't have to fight to get him there. he'll get himself there with the help of this program.
