Please excuse me while I make a crazy statement right now:
I'm kind of excited about Hurricane Irene! I've been suppressing a thrilled enjoyment of the prospect of wild winds and torrential downpours experienced from the safety of our home! We're on high enough ground, we've got everything out of the yard, and we'll have plenty of water. Bring it on!
Now, let me make the proper statement:
I hope the hurricane downgrades to a tropical storm by the time it reaches us. While we're relatively safe where we are, the storm surge coupled with a New Moon high tide is going to wreak havoc along the coast tomorrow. Our already saturated ground is going to have a tough time with all the rain, even at Tropical Storm level, and there's predicted to be a lot of flooding near folks who have streams and rivers nearby. I used to live in the river valley about where the eye is expected to go through, and had experienced two floods during that time. It's not fun and pain in the ass for everyone involved.
The main problem:
Here in CT the last hurricane that hit us was in 1985, Hurricane Gloria. I remember the build up and all the preparation and being SO excited! I was 8 years old. It was a lot of wind and rain, and we lost power. Then the eye came through with bright sunny skies and we waited for the worst to hit us again! Nope! Nothing. Maybe just some rain. It died out and was a huge disappointment!
I see a lot of people mentioning Gloria on Facebook and blowing off or scoffing at the warnings we're getting about Irene. I hope people are prepared for the worst. I know we're not. We don't have nearly enough non-perishable food here. We've got some hotdogs and beans we can heat up on the grill if the power's out long enough after the storm passes, but I'm not sure what we've got to eat during the storm if the power's out. Probably crackers. :) (We can always got to Mom and Dad's house after the storm if we need to as well, which is why I'm not too worried.)
So, I hope everyone is playing it safe, even while they laugh it off. Me, I'm looking forward to the wind and the rain getting here, and excited to watch it all happen, but I still want the best for everyone involved. :)
