A free Saturday where the planets/breweries/pornographers aligned and I procured a large dose of fun.
Ironically, mild music surrounded me all day at venues -Chubby Checker, soft rock and annoying white boy jazz
-near terrible trumpet player [probably high].
The Hessian invasion of Deep Ellum started early with drinks/dinner at cajun joint, The Free Man.
Prime directive: the Decibel Tour at Trees: Kill the Client, Immolation, Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse
Onto the Show
I haven't been to Trees since they re-opened and it is run tighter than it's previous incarnation.
Personnel were actually working the line to keep things running smoothly. Will call allowed me to bypass the line. Very cool.
Bad mix/sound system -not much clarity so the bands didn't “shine” like they could have.
Lack of clarity, muddyness drowning the drums but the vocals were done properly.
Kill the Client -local grind band, good stuff
Immolation -enjoyed the show, standard fare for live death metal. They didn't play "Those Left Behind".
The bass player's ass-length hair is hilarious -prior to the show it's in an odd ponytail that's poofed out.
Napalm Death -after 1st song every band member except the drummer gave out mix/monitor instructions and
Barney then stated “Anyone else?” and held the mic out to the crowd. Solid showing by death metal professionals.
Cannibal Corpse -like getting hit repeatedly with a blunt object. Cannibal Corpse is as Cannibal Corpse does.
The Final Note
Slayer. Jeff Hanneman's death was fresh on everyone's minds, cheers turned into chants every time Slayer erupted from the PA.
But...not one mention from any of the bands that night. If I were in a band, local or touring, tribute would be paid by working
one of Jeff's songs or a key part/riff into the set. This, I found disturbing.
