He and Phoebe had spent all day taking turns at keeping Cole distracted from the birthday party preparations going on, but now dinner was on the table, the bedroom had been done up with the new satin sheets, presents had been wrapped, and there were candles everywhere

Phoebe gave him a nervous smile as she came in and went to her chair. She stood behind it for a moment and took a deep breath.

"Hey, Cole? Love, can you come in here for a minute, please?"

"What is it?" Cole said, walking into the dining room. He stopped and stared. He knew Sam had been making dinner, but he wasn't expecting all this. "What. . . .?" he said.

Sam exchanged a brief glance with Phoebe, grinning at Cole's reaction. "Happy birthday."

"Happy birthday, sweetheart."

"It's not my birthday," Cole began, then stopped as he realized, yes, yes it was. January 19th. "I totally forgot," he said sheepishly.

Sam laughed and came over to pull Cole's chair out from the table for him, kissing him on the cheek. "Dork," he said affectionately. "We didn't forget."

Phoebe grinned and kissed Cole. "It's okay, because we remembered."

"You didn't need to do all this," Cole said, taking his seat. "All my favorites . . . steak, artichokes. . . ."

"'course we didn't need to." Sam nuzzled the top of Cole's head before filling his wine glass, then holding Phoebe's chair for her. "But we wanted to. Your birthday has to be special."

"We wanted to give you a special night for your birthday, love," Phoebe said sitting down in her chair.

"Any night I'm with you is special," Cole said, feeling a little overwhelmed that they went to so much trouble for him.

"Well, we wanted this one to be a little extra special. C'mon, it's your birthday." Sam made sure Phoebe's glass was filled before taking his own seat, and raised his glass with an expectant glance at Phoebe.

Phoebe raised her glass. "Happy bithday, love. I hope this is a great year for you."

Cole raised his glass as well. "Thanks," he said. "You two are great. I love you."

"We love you too," Sam said, confident in speaking for both of them on this. "And I for one am really glad we're all together again."

"Together forever," she said with a bright smile.
