44 Blueberry Hill, Front Porch, Tuesday Midday

Dec 09, 2008 11:53

Okay, so Sam had skipped out on work yesterday, but he'd told himself he had a good enough reason, though whether or not Piper would believe him was a different story. What with Phoebe's due date approaching and that freakishly intense blonde Cylon's promise to come back and take him and the girls 'home,' wherever the hell the Colonies called home ( Read more... )

Piper spotted him sitting out on the porch, so she wandered on over. "Hey. You weren't at work yesterday. Everything okay?"

Crap. "Yeah," Sam grunted, and rocked the porch swing a little faster. "Fine. Just stuff to take care of here at home . . . getting ready and all, you know."

"Is Phoebe okay? The twins?" Piper asked, concerned. All she heard was stuff to take of at home and she went into worried mode. Or more-worried-than-usual mode.

"They're fine," Sam assured her hastily. "I just want to be nearby, you know? I've been thinking maybe I should take a few weeks off, actually, since it's getting so close to time and everything."

The look in his eyes might have indicated that it wasn't completely fine, though.

"You can take as much time as you need," Piper said, frowning. "Are you sure everything is okay? What's up?"

Yes, she was concerned about him.

Sam raked his fingernails over the knee of his jeans just for the scant distraction of hearing the near-inaudible sound of nails on denim.

"Remember when there was the visitor weekend thing?"

Piper nodded. "Yeah. You got a random visitor?"

"Three, actually," Sam said, lowering his voice. "Not worried about two of 'em, they were nice enough, but the third . . ."

"What happened? Did this person make threats against you or Phoebe or..." Piper was exactly reassured.

"Phoebe met her," Sam said, and he didn't realize he'd clenched his fists. "Phoebe thought she was the Seer. Crazy bitch was way too fascinated by the pregnancy . . . thinks it's a miracle, says she's coming back and that me and the girls have to go back to my world with her. No way in hell am I letting that happen, but . . . not taking chances."

"Oh hell no!" Piper said, definite anger in her voice. "That's not going to happen. I won't let it and neither will anyone else in this town. Any idea who she is? Demon or something? Easy to vanquish?"

Sam let out a sudden burst of frustrated, half hysterical laughter. "Gods, I wish. No, she's a Cylon." His voice dropped again, and took on a haunted tone as he added, quietly, "Like me."

Piper looked a bit confused. "What's a Cylon?"

Sam raised one hand and looked at it, the way he tended to do when the knowledge of what he was ran up against what he always believed he'd been.

"Not sure exactly, any more. Thought I knew, back when . . . they were the robots who rebelled against the Colonies and left for their own system. But apparently not all of them look like robots . . . and not all of them knew what they were, either."

Suddenly, Piper was reminded of a conversation she had awhile ago. "Cally mentioned something about this, but I just thought she was dealing with a lot of...stress."

If dealing with stress meant kind of crazy.

Sam snorted. "I thought she was nuts too, yeah. And then . . . stuff happened, and it all made sense. Much as something like this can make sense, I guess. Me surviving that attack when Cole wasn't himself, the weird way that magic plague affected me back in Fandom years ago, why my doping test results came out weird, the damn music I wouldn't stop hearing . . ." He ran a hand through his hair. "And then one night I just -- the music. I followed it and ended up having some kind of vision or something in the Crystal Fox. Saw all this stuff, like a life I never had. It matched up with stuff Cally told me, and the other two Cylons who came to visit -- one of 'em was her husband, by the way, and their kid -- said stuff that backed it up too."
